DRC and M23 Rebels Sign Ceasefire Deal in Qatar

Doha: DR Congo and M23 rebels have reached a ceasefire agreement in Qatar, aiming to put an end to the ongoing conflict between the two factions. The agreement, known as the Declaration of Principles, mandates both parties to avoid attacks, halt “hate propaganda,” and refrain from attempting to seize new positions by force.

According to France24.com, the ceasefire deal was formalized on Saturday. The deal outlines specific stipulations for both sides to adhere to, ensuring a cessation of hostilities and fostering a more peaceful environment. The agreement is a significant step towards stabilizing the region, which has been plagued by violence and unrest.

In another development, activist Sherifa Riahi was detained in Tunisia in May 2024 for allegedly harboring illegal immigrants. Despite giving birth just two months prior, Riahi has remained imprisoned for over a year without formal charges. Her situation has drawn attention from human rights organizations, which claim her detention is indicative of increasing repression under President Kais Saied. Saied has been criticized for ruling with unchecked power since he dissolved the parliament four years ago.
