Brussels: On World Refugee Day, the European Union (EU) and its Member States are emphasising their commitment to supporting the more than 117 million displaced people worldwide. These individuals, forced from their homes due to conflict, persecution, violence, and human rights violations, continue to rebuild their lives and contribute to the communities that welcome them. According to European Union, the EU, as the world's leading humanitarian donor, supports refugees, asylum seekers, and host communities by promoting international protection standards and ensuring access to essential services and durable solutions. The EU collaborates with international partners, including the United Nations, to address the root causes of displacement and strengthen stability in crisis-affected regions. This approach has been pivotal, as evidenced by the decrease in the number of displaced people worldwide for the first time in a decade in 2025. The EU has taken significant responsibility in hosting refugees, providing te mporary protection to over 4.8 million people fleeing the war in Ukraine. In addition to efforts within Europe, the EU leads humanitarian responses globally, delivering life-saving aid in regions such as Sudan, Gaza, Lebanon, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Cuba, Haiti, Myanmar, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Long-term solutions are also a focus for the EU, as it invests in initiatives that build self-reliance among refugees and host communities. Efforts include education, livelihoods, social protection, social cohesion, and inclusion. The newly adopted Joint Communication on Humanitarian Action outlines an Integrated Approach to Fragility, promoting public-private partnerships for investments in fragile settings. This approach addresses the root causes of fragility and displacement, promoting resilience, stability, peace, and sustainable development while meeting immediate humanitarian needs. The EU underscores the importance of global cooperation, with its humanitarian and development partners playing a cr ucial role in protecting the rights and dignity of refugees and asylum seekers worldwide. The EU remains a committed partner of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. With the introduction of the first European Asylum and Migration Management Strategy, the EU presents a vision for a comprehensive approach to migration and asylum that is both fair and firm.
