Conakry: Guinea has surpassed 200 recorded mpox cases since the outbreak was initially detected, as reported by health officials. Several neighboring countries are also experiencing recent increases in infections.
According to Nam News Network, World Health Organization director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated last month that the virus continues to be an international health emergency, particularly with the rise in cases in West Africa. Guinea’s National Agency for Health Security (ANSS) spokesman, Sory Keira, confirmed that the country has now recorded a total of 206 cases. The virus has two subtypes, clade 1 and clade 2.
Originally endemic to central Africa, mpox gained global attention in May 2022 when clade 2 spread internationally, predominantly affecting gay and bisexual men. In June, WHO emphasized that the disease would remain an international health emergency due to the ongoing rise in cases, including a recent surge in West Africa, and the potential for undetected transmission in countries outside Africa.
From January to late May of this year, Sierra Leone reported a total of 3,350 cases, including 16 fatalities. Meanwhile, Liberia’s National Public Health Institute indicated that there were approximately 71 active cases in early June.
